Regulation through body work
Your nervous system is its own universe of interconnected nerve networks, ever receiving & exchanging information from the internal & external domains of your experience. Massage is proven to be a powerful support of your nervous system’s health, as it helps to regulate the vital functions of the Autonomic Nervous System, which is comprised of the Sympathetic (fight & flight) & Parasympathetic Nervous System (rest & digest).
Massage activates the calming Parasympathetic Nervous System, which in turn slows down body activity, such as reducing heart rate & lowering blood pressure. When receiving a massage, the sensory receptors of your skin & within your muscle fibres communicate a state of relaxation and calm to your entire body.
Massage promotes the release of endorphins, which are Mother Nature’s mighty fine feel-good hormones & natural pain killers. It can also release blocks in nerves & reduce the compression on the nerve root caused by muscle tension. Our modern world environment often stimulates our Autonomic Nervous System in ways we don’t immediately consciously recognise.
Beyond the surface of our thinking minds, our Sympathetic & Parasympathetic Nervous Systems are (metaphorically) dancing to the music of our environments. As much as we’d often like to, we’re simply not designed to “think ourselves out of the stress”, as these states of calm and relaxation operate outside of our voluntary control. This is why getting a massage is a wonderful tool to use in working with the nervous system, as it provides your body a genuine opportunity to restore calm & optimum functioning. If you’re feeling anxious, having trouble sleeping or experiencing prolonged muscle tension & soreness, it’s possible your nervous system is in need of some gentle encouragement to bring itself back to a balanced state of calm.
